Bhagirath's penance was answered finally and the holy river Ganga trickled to earth from Lord Shiva's locks. The river's pious water revived king Sagara's sixty thousand sons. Following the tradition of Bhagirath, religious Hindus stand in the holy waters of Haridwar and pray for the salvation of their departed ancestors. The city of Haridwar serves as a doorway to the starting points of the rivers Yamuna and Ganga, at an elevation of 3000 to 4500 meters into central Himalayas' snowy ranges.
